This movie is a mix of spy, comedy, a hint of romance and action. There is also a twist there somewhere in the mix. What happens when spy from different countries meet. Do they get along? Do they not? Can they work together? Will they kill each other? They are sure to get on each other’s nerves.
The movie starts by showing us glimpses of how the world is always in a state of war. The last scene is when the Russians built a wall in Berlin dividing it into East and West.
A man is shown going from East to West and following unconventional path to reach a garage. There he meets a lady of German decent who calls him Mr. Important Suit. It seems like the American has one of their scientists missing (who earlier worked for Hitler) and the mechanic is girl is the biological daughter of the man.
To help find the scientist, the Americans wanted the girl to infiltrate her mother’s brother (her uncle) who may have the scientist captive. The story is clear but the road it follows is interesting. Looks like the Russian put a bug in the man’s bag and followed him to the garage. He interestingly escapes into West Berlin but not without struggle.
The Russian spy gives a good chase. The movie is interesting between Napoleon Solo (played by Henry Cavill), Russian spy, Illya (played by the handsome Armie Hammer) and the German girl, Gaby (played by Alicia Vikander).
After a little heated conversation between Solo and his senior, they meet the next day for a new assignment. Surprisingly, this assignment involves the Americans and Russians working together to stop the Nazi’s from building a nuclear bomb. Illya Kuryakin and Solo absolutely do not get along, trying to expose each other’s week side.
Apart from working together, they are tasked to get the informative drive before the other partner does. While Solo handles the power couple, Kruyakin becomes one with Gaby to handle her uncle Rudy. They travel to Rome under fake identities.
The fake couple is total fire (feels like dark humor) as they wreak the whole room, with a drunken Gaby trying to wrestle with Illya (romance brews). The exchange of Russian and American made bugs before heading to the party is a pretty humorous scene as well.
At the party, Gaby gets herself invited to a date by the playboy tycoon and Solo catches the attention of the fanatic lady.
That night, they go to check in the company warehouse for signs of suspicious activity and find evidence but it seems to be already stolen. The two agents make a very action and adventure packed escape with some humorous dialogues thrown into the mix.
The evil people suspect the fake fiancée and fake Solo. Now we are left puzzled when Gaby is shown reposting to someone in the agents’ absence. The two men reach back the hotel just in time to be confirmed innocent.
The next day, Illya worries about sending Gaby to lunch with her uncle and Solo teases him about the growing feelings. Finally Gaby, meets her uncle and his friends but we are shocked to see when she exposes the agents and they have to make a run for their lives. She gets to see her father but it seems like the evil people brought her in to threaten the scientist into making the bomb for them.
Meanwhile Solo is trapped into torture and Illya comes to save him. The unnecessary angle of Uncle Rudy being the infamous torture man seemed unnecessary to me. Anyways, they both confirm with each other of Gaby’s backfiring.
In the movie, I like Illya and Solo scenes best since they are always funny and adventurous. I like Illya and Gaby scenes next since they are filled with romance, dark humour and fun. Gaby and solo scenes are just friendly.
It is when the British intervene and take command of the two agents, that they request them to save a lady agent. The betrayed agents now realize that Gaby, before being approached by Americans or Russians was recruited by the British. And the Ring Illya gave her was also a bug, which she didn’t expose and fooled everyone into thinking that she was a betrayer.
It’s a nice twist. All that is left from here on is, how the two will acquire that hard disk (they were ordered to acquire it before the other and kill the other one if needed for the same).
Even if they keep rubbing in each other’s faces, in the end they rub off of each other and become slightly friendly. They save the disk, the girl and the secure the warhead. I think both could have had the disk drive (there were two- original and back up) and given it to their countries but in the end they decide to destroy it.
The mission is over and, when it seems that they are parting ways, another joint assignment comes through.
It indicates that there could be a part two if people like the first part enough to make the next.
Things like Illya’s father’s watch and Solo’s stealing abilities, name calling (Peril and Cowboy) and such others that bring nice touch to the whole movie. There are other tiny things in the movie that I would like to talk about but would be better, if you watched yourself.
